St John's Local Information
|
|
Newfoundland was first explored by the Vikings around 1000 AD, and was re-discovered by John Cabot in 1497, who commented on the extraordinary bounties of the sea. Over the last five centuries Newfoundland grew as Britain's first overseas colony, finally joining Canada as its 12th province in 1949. St John's is undergoing a transformation as capital of Canada's East Coast fishery to becoming capital of the East Coast offshore oil.
