St John's is on the eastern tip of Newfoundland. It is accessible by air and by road & ferry to the rest of Canada.
To get to St John's by car, you take the Trans-Canada Highway to North Sydney, Nova Scotia and catch the ferry to the Island. In the summer months (generally, June 21 to Sept 1) you can catch a ferry to Argentia and drive 131 km on route 100 to the city, and year-round you can take th ferry to Port-aux-Basques on the southwest corner of the island and drive the 905 km on the #1 Trans-Canada Highway (about 9-10 hours of driving time).
The streets in St John's tend to ancle across the hill in a gentle slope, designed originally to allow horse-drawn wagons to navigate up the steep hills.
